My computer is running slow and keeps freezing?

My laptop runs really slow from the get go as soon as I log on, but then it completely freezes and I have to push the power to even get it to turn off! I think it may be bogged down by stuff running in the background, but I don't know how to turn it off. I don't think its a virus. Any solutions?
