Do you think it's better for judges to be appointed or elected?

I'm particularly wondering about which method is more prone to getting bogged down in partisan politics. The intuitive thing would be to say that having judges appointed by politicians would inject more politics into the matter, but the race for two slots on Michigan's Supreme Court last November makes me question that somewhat. Anybody have any thoughts on the matter?
